Paintings

In my painting practice, I work in oil, acrylic and watercolor, as well as lesser used media like casein and egg tempera. I avoid all toxic pigments and conflict minerals (cadmium, cobalt, chromium, zinc, etc.), paint solvent-free with oils, used recycled materials as often as possible and evaporate my acrylic rinse water to avoid adding microplastics to our water supply. Most of my works shown here are large canvases (36×48 inches/1×1.3m or larger) with acrylic.

The “No Anesthesia” series (2023-present) reflects my experience with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a genetic disease that causes chronic pain and joint degeneration, but also makes me resistant to local anesthesia (think novocaine or lidocaine). EDS causes all kinds of weird effects that mean I have to have many more medical procedures than the average person, but also means I have a much more painful experience when having those procedures.

The “Unfinished” series (2023-present) is a series of life-size, conceptual, deliberately unfinished self-portraits that are finished only in the areas I can reach while laying or sitting on the floor in front of the easel, as I’m often forced to do on high pain and fatigue days, highlighting all the cultural richness we collectively miss out on when we continue to marginalize disabled and chronically ill people.
